Dolls and symbols of fertility can be found all around the world. They can be cast in iron or brass or, as in this case, skilfully hand-carved from timber. They are supposed to bring sexual prowess and abundant fertility to their owners.

Dr Trevor Roberts, who provided professional guidance to Clive all the time he researched and wrote this book, was on vacation in Jamaica when he came across a wood carver working on the remains of fallen trees that had suffered during the typhoon season there. Trevor bought this wood doll and promptly called it ‘Jamaica Peters’ – soon abbreviated to JP – and sent it to Clive.

The symbolism wasn’t lost on Clive!

In recognition of his old friend, and as a tribute to his input to the book, Clive decided to use a picture of JP on the front cover of his book. It is a ridiculous and anatomically distorted vision of sexual prowess – but the message about the content of the book is clear!
